Dexcom is centering its long-term growth strategy on securing expanded Medicare coverage for type 2 non-insulin patients by mid-2027. The company expects this move will increase physician prescribing rates. The manufacturer is scaling its 15-Day sensor technology to capture a larger share of the U.S. market and is integrating new AI features into its over-the-counter offerings.

"Once you have CMS coverage, and CMS coverage ultimately plays through to Medicare Advantage Part C over time, and usually pretty quickly, all of a sudden you now have 75% coverage. The propensity to write goes up significantly," said Jereme Sylvain, CFO of Dexcom, during the Wells Fargo healthcare conference.

Scaling the Sensor Base and Stelo

Dexcom is focused on the rollout of its 15-Day sensor. The company projects this will reach approximately 50% penetration of its U.S. G-Series customer base by the end of 2026. This transition aims to simplify product offerings and improve patient adherence through longer-wear devices.

The company’s non-prescription continuous glucose monitor, Stelo, is contributing between $35 million and $42 million in quarterly revenue. Dexcom is enhancing Stelo with AI-based coaching tools designed to provide users with health insights based on their glucose patterns.

"The so what is going to be, if you have Stelo has an AI coach. If you log your food, it will compare your food to your glucose and make recommendations," said Sylvain.

Strategic Importance of Coverage

For Dexcom, the push for Medicare coverage establishes a standardized reimbursement pathway that private insurers often follow. By securing Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) coverage, the company aims to simplify the prescription process for clinicians who currently face varying reimbursement hurdles depending on the patient's insurance provider.

While the company faces near-term manufacturing headwinds, the focus on long-term market penetration remains the primary driver of its capital allocation. The 2027 target for type 2 non-insulin coverage is a milestone in Dexcom's effort to transition from a specialized diabetes management firm into a metabolic health provider.
