Deutsche Bank has upgraded Anheuser-Busch InBev and Campari Group from 'hold' to 'buy'. The bank points to a strategic pivot toward emerging markets and soft drink portfolios as a way to offset declining alcohol demand in developed economies. This move reflects a re-evaluation of the European consumer staples sector as analysts adjust to changing consumption habits.

"ABI is one of the most [emerging markets]-focused companies in European Staples. This exposure provides meaningful protection from the structural challenges in [developed markets], while the company's dominant market shares across key markets support resilient growth and profitability," said Mitch Collett, analyst at Deutsche Bank, in a statement.

Rationale for the Upgrade

Following the upgrade, Deutsche Bank raised the price target for Anheuser-Busch InBev to €79 and for Campari to €7.1, according to an Investing.com report. The bank’s analysis highlights that Anheuser-Busch InBev derives 64% of its sales and 61% of its earnings before interest and taxes from emerging markets. This provides a geographic hedge against the stagnant growth seen in North America and Europe.

Collett noted that beverage alcohol growth in developed regions faces significant headwinds. These include evolving consumer health priorities, the rising adoption of GLP-1 weight-loss medications, and competition from cannabis. These factors are pressuring traditional alcohol sales, while the soft drinks category continues to show consistent growth potential.

Sector-Wide Adjustments

Deutsche Bank also updated its outlook for several other major beverage players. The bank maintained 'buy' ratings while adjusting price targets for some, and retained 'hold' ratings for others:

  • Coca-Cola Europacific Partners: Retained 'buy', target raised to $117.
  • Coca-Cola Hellenic: Retained 'buy', target raised to 5,725 pence.
  • Carlsberg: Retained 'buy', target cut to DKK1,160.
  • Diageo: Retained 'hold', target cut to 1,734 pence.
  • Heineken: Retained 'hold', target cut to €76.
  • Pernod Ricard: Retained 'hold', target raised to €61.

What Is at Stake for Beverage Firms

The shift in ratings underscores a transition for major alcohol producers. As developed-market consumers moderate their alcohol intake, companies are leaning on emerging market volume and diversified non-alcoholic offerings to maintain profitability. The ability to capture market share in developing economies is a primary differentiator for investors assessing the staples sector.
