Chemed Corporation is leaning on expansion in its VITAS Healthcare division to balance margin pressures from rising internet marketing expenses in its Roto-Rooter plumbing segment. The operational strategy was detailed during the company's presentation at the Jefferies 2026 Healthcare Services and Technology Conference on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, held at the 1 Hotel in Nashville.
In the public markets, Chemed Corp (NYSE: CHE) closed at $504.06, down 0.38%, on September 18, 2026, according to Finnhub market data. The dual-segment operator has experienced diverging trajectories across its two core businesses, with hospice care gains absorbing headwinds from digital advertising inflation.
Dual-Segment Business Model and VITAS Performance
Chemed Corporation operates two wholly owned subsidiaries: VITAS Healthcare, which functions as the nation's largest provider of end-of-life hospice care, and Roto-Rooter, the nation's leading provider of plumbing and drain cleaning services. During the recent second quarter, the parent company's financial results reflected the strength of the hospice division.
According to Chemed's Q2 2026 earnings call data, total revenue increased 8.8% year-over-year while adjusted diluted earnings per share surged 41.9%. This expansion was supported by operational performance at VITAS, alongside the successful resolution of prior Medicare cap billing liabilities that had weighed on historical cash flows.
Digital Marketing Headwinds at Roto-Rooter
While the healthcare segment expanded, the plumbing and drain cleaning unit faced profitability friction. Roto-Rooter's adjusted EBITDA margin slipped 77 basis points to 21.1% in the second quarter of 2026, driven primarily by escalating customer acquisition costs in the digital space.
Data from the Q2 2026 earnings conference call shows that this margin compression stemmed from a $3.1 million increase in internet marketing expenses. Paid digital leads expanded to represent 59% of total incoming customer service requests, reflecting heightened competitive bidding for online search traffic.
What Is at Stake for Investors
The balancing act between hospice expansion and digital advertising inflation highlights the structural mechanics of a conglomerate spanning specialized healthcare and home services. As digital customer acquisition costs continue to evolve for consumer-facing trades, parent companies rely on segments with high margins to maintain earnings stability across economic cycles.
