Brazilian Court Halts Sigma Lithium Mine Over Quilombola Claims

A Brazilian court ordered the immediate suspension of environmental licenses and extraction activities at Sigma Lithium's Grota do Cirilo mine, halting operations following a legal challenge by traditional Quilombola communities over proximity concerns and environmental impact assessments.

The judicial resolution stems from a precautionary measure requested by the Federation of Quilombola Communities of the State of Minas Gerais. The community group challenged the distance metrics reported by the company regarding the separation between the extraction site and the traditional territory of the Baú Quilombola community.

"The risk of damage arises from the fact that the mining complex operates continuously, extracting resources and carrying out constant blasting and earth movements just a few kilometers from the traditional territory," said Judge Antonio Lucio de Oliveira Barbosa in the ruling.

Regulatory Precedents in the Jequitinhonha Valley

This judicial intervention is the second major operational hurdle for the flagship project in recent months. In July, regional environmental authorities seized the Grota do Cirilo facilities following a routine inspection, though operations resumed last month after the company reached an agreement with the Minas Gerais state government.

The broader Jequitinhonha Valley region has experienced escalating tensions between resource extraction firms and local populations. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office previously requested suspensions of various lithium projects across the valley, citing a lack of proper prior consultation with indigenous and traditional communities as mandated by constitutional frameworks.
